I usually don't go out of my way to complain about a bad experience, but this one was pretty far from the luxurious stay we were expecting. :-/
My boyfriend and I wanted to escape the city for a day, so I snagged a Groupon deal for Glen Cove Mansion that included an over-night stay, two free drinks, breakfast, and a 3 hour bike rental.
I was really excited at first, only to find out that guests don't actually stay in the mansion (should have done more research). The rooms are located in a back-building addition, equivalent to that of a Best-Western or Days Inn. Most of the mansion has been converted into a conference center, which steals away any of its historic charm.
The mansion is not very close to town, so unless you brought a car, you're stuck having to eat dinner at the hotel. I didn't mind doing this until I found out that it's a buffet style dinner for $25 per head. Everything was overcooked and dry, specifically the Salmon and prime rib. Drinks were INCREDIBLY over-priced -- $17.50 for a glass of crappy wine and a beer. And while breakfast was included, it was also buffet style; with powdered eggs and frozen pancakes (they were pretty crunchy when we bit into them).
We tried to make the trip more positive by taking advantage of the bike rental -- but alas, about 5 minutes into the bike ride, we found that riding in low-gear/slowly was nearly impossible, otherwise the chains would fall off. Plus, no helmets. This didn't seem safe considering the streets around Glen Cover were narrow with no bike paths, and we had to race down the streets to keep the bikes moving while cars zoomed past us.
I have a lot of sympathy for those who have purchased their stay here at full price, because even with the Groupon deal at $189 (this does not include the train cost, cab fair, dinner or drink costs), I left feeling as though my purchase and time away from the city was a total waste.
No one, yet.
The $189 refund.
